South Dakota Nonprofit Capacity Building Program

The Rural Philanthropy Institute has brought together two institutions internationally recognized as leaders in the development of effective fundraising professionals to create a program specifically for Rural nonprofit professionals.

The South Dakota Nonprofit Capacity Building program joins the forces of The Fund Raising School at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (The Fund Raising School) and CFRE International in a research-based program to support South Dakota nonprofit employees, volunteers and board members with fundraising experience to build their capacity in effective fundraising and other important nonprofit leadership skills.

I never anticipated that our institution would launch a capital campaign. However, when the opportunity presented itself, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I possessed the skills and resources needed, which gave me the confidence to take on this challenge. I recommend this program for any institution aiming to grow their fundraising efforts and foster stronger relationships with donors.

Rural nonprofits can face unique challenges. Knowing that, The Rural Philanthropy Institute created a program specifically with Rural nonprofits in mind. The goal is to bring high-quality training that is specific to the needs and funding landscapes of rural communities. By working with nonprofit leaders in rural areas, we hope to build capacity and sustainability for these essential organizations.

A 15-month Training Program

The South Dakota Nonprofit Capacity Building program is a 15-month training program that involves:

  • Four fundraising courses taught by faculty from The Fundraising School.

  • Attainment of the necessary education requirements for CFRE credentials.

  • Activities with a statewide cohort of South Dakota fundraising professionals.

Successful completion of the program results in participants attaining the Certificate in Fund Raising Management (CFRM) from The Fund Raising School and completion of education requirements to become a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Individuals that complete this program will receive training and attain credentials that raise the bar on professional fundraising practice in South Dakota.

The SD Capacity Building program provided me with high quality learning experiences from instructors at the Lilly School of Philanthropy and a cohort of proud fundraisers from across South Dakota. I have been able to use this comprehensive fund-raising knowledge in my professional life and as I serve in volunteer leadership roles with other nonprofit organizations.
